History

Nightwish was started by Tuomas Holopainen (keyboard) in 1996 he was joined by schoolmate and ex-bandmate Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen (acoustic guitars) and classical vocalist Tarja Turunen (they all had the same music teacher.

The name Nightwish came from their first song. It was decided that Turunen's operatric voice was too strong for the acoustic style and it was decided to add in heavy metal elements.

They were joined in 1997 following the release of their first demo by Jukka Nevalainen (drummer) and the acoustic guitar was taken over by an electric one.
This heavy metal element on the bands original style forms the core of Nightwishes sound.

In April 1997 the nabd entered the studio to record seven songs for their second demo called Angels First as a lead up to their first full length album which had the same name. The demo made its way to the Finnish record label Spinefarm Records in May 1997 they signed Nightwish to a two album deal. Angels fall First the full album was first released internationally in November 1997 and reached 31 on Finnish album charts with the single The Carpenter reaching 3 on Finnish charts.

In December 1997 after only one year they made their live debut in their hometown Kitee Finland. Their first video clip for the carpenter in April 1998. On october 1998 they released their second full length album OCeanborn in Finland only. They used a more technical and progressive sound than their original CD abandoning much of their original ambient and folk elements of their original CD. The album also features guest vocals by Tapio Wilska .
Sacrament of Wilderness hit no.1 on Finnish charts. The CD was released internationally in the spring of 1999.

In studio working on their third album Nightwish was accepted into the Finnish Eurovision Song Contest with the song Sleepwalker. there although they won the public vote the jury chose local gospel singer Nina Astrom to represent Finland. In May 2000 they released their third album Wishmaster which debut no. 1 and for the following three weeks was certified gold in Finland.

There was a lot of critical response with Allmusic citing that the album was repetitive and as a whole album it could be annoying or frustrating. However German magazine Rock Hard declared Wishmaster album of the month. After the release of Wishmaster Nightwish went on their first world tour playing in South America, Mexico, Canada and in Europe with Sinergy and Eternal Tears of Sorrow. In the summer the band returened to Europe and played at the Wacken Open Air and the Bieop Metal festival.

In 2001 Nightwish recorded a cover of Gary Moore's Over the Hills and far away with two new songs 10th man down and Away together with a remake of Astral Romance (from the Angels Fall First album). They used Tony Kakko for the singing instead of Tuomas. This was their first and only to date EP . This included another guest performance by Tapio Wilska. They also released a VHS, DVD and CD with live material from a show in Tampere (December 29 2000). This was all collectively known as From Wishes to Eternity.

Soon after their release the band hit one of the hardest points yet this involved mainly the bassist Sami Vänskä. He had started acting strangely to the band like missing appointments and failing to take gigs as seriously as the other members. The band discussed this with Vanska several times, with no change, tensions started to build. Meanwhile guitarist Emppu Vuorinen had started complaining that he felt like a hired gun who would only do what he's asked to he was told to bite the bullet and no more was mentioned over the problem.

Soon Holopainen started thinking of breaking up the band. After a gig in Russia he sent a text message to a fellow muisician Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica asking what he had planned for the next year and that he felt like he did not have a band any more. After the last gig For Over the Hills and Far Away tour in 2001 Holopainen called Drakkar and Spinefarm unofficialy calling Nightwish over. He said that he might produce another album, but would never perform another show for the band, the same message was also written on the band's message board.

Right after the last gig Holopainen went on a week long hiking trip to Lapland with Tony Kakko feeling relieved that he had finally, if unofficialy, broken Nightwish up. Fortunately something happened during the hike and though they barley discussed it they both knew that it would not be that easy to break up Nightwish. When he returned he re4cieved a phone call from Ewo Pohjola offering to become their manager and to help him straigthen things out and Holopainen agreed.

Holopainen understood that in order to continue Nightwish changes needed to be made. He asked Sam Vanska to leave the band. Marco Hietala was asked to join the band which meant that he effectively left Sinergy. As well as doing the guitar Marco could also do the male voice. Where earlier as required Holopainen or a guest muisician would perform the vocals. Holopainen has since said that he and Vanska keep in touch, but don't plan on working together again.

In 2002 Nightwish reoleased Century Child along with the singles Ever Dream and Bless the Child. the main difference between this and previous albums is the use of a live ochestra in Bless the Child, Ever Dream, Feel For You and the Beauty of the Beast. One of the songs best loved is the bands version of Phantom of the Opera from the famous musical. The song was replayed often at concerts until Tarja Turunen was replaced with Anette Olzon at which point they stated that they would never play the song live again.

Century Child was certified gold two hours after it's release and platinum 2 weeks later. It also set a record for Finnish charts never before had second been so far away from first. They created two videos Bless the Child and End of all Hope. In 2003 Nightwish released their second DVD, End of Innocence. It tells the bands story from Holopainen, Nevalainen and Tapio Wilska's words for two hours and includes bits of live songs, exclusive footage etc. Tarja Turunen got married in the summer of 2003 this was to have impact on her later dismissal.

Once was release along with their first single Nemo (Latin for Nobody not the fish) from that album on June 7 2004. The single topped charts in Finland and Hungary and reached top ten in five other countries. Nemo is their most successful single to date. With Once Nightwish began to produce ochestral versions of some of their songs e.g. Nemo, Ghost Love Score, Eva and Amaranth. Once uses a full ochestra this time from London it is also their second album to feature a full length Finnish song Kuolema tekee taiteilijan (English: Death Makes an Artist). Once has sold triple platinum in Finland, Platinum in Germany, Gold ion sweden and reached no1 in the Greek, Norweigan and Hungarian album charts. I Wish I had an Angel is also in the film Alone in the Dark. With this success the band was able to perform the Once world tour allowing them to visit countries in which they had never played. They performed at the opening ceremony of the 2005 World Championships in Athletics, held in Helsinki.

A best of album was released in September 2005 containing songs from their whole disocgraphy entitled Highest Hope. It featured a cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes and a remake of Sleeping Sun (a new videao was also made with a medieval battleground for Sleeping Sun although not included in the CD).

Soon after the recording in the Hartwall Areena on October 21 2005, of their new DVD End of an Era (released in June 2006) the four other band members decided that it was best to continue without Tarja. They showed this by an open letter to her posted on the bands website it was written by Holopainen, but signed by the other members. The main reason in th letter was that the band felt that both her and her husbands (an Argentine businessman) commercial intrests had changed her attitude to the band. Turunen responded to the incident twice, during a press conference in Finland and Germany, saying that it came as a shock to her, because she was not notified before the letter was given. She also stated that she felt that the personal attacks on her husband were unwarranted and that playing the issue out to the public was cruel. She also posted an open letter on her personal website and through various TV, magazine and newspaper interviews.

In 2006/2007 the band recorded their sixth full length album Dark Passion Play. It began with drum recordings, then guitar, bass and demo keyboard.Ochestral and choir took place in Abbey Road Studios after those the final synthesizers and vocals were recoded.

On March 17 2006 the band called for vocalists to send in demos for Turunen's place as female vocals. There was a lot of speculation in April 2007 the heavy metal magazine Terrorizer said as an April Fool that Sarah Brightman would be the new vocalist. The band resonded to this and other rumors by stating on their website that fans should not believe any source other than the band itself. The identity of the new singer was published on Thursday 24 May the 35 year old Alyson Avenue lead singer Anette Olzon was announced to replace Turunen.

The replacement of the lead vocalist has lead many fans to call them the new Nightwish. The day after the "reveal" the charity single Eva was released as a download only first off the album. On the 13 of June Nightwish released the title Dark Passion Play and artwork to their new album on their official website as well as the name and cover of their second single a CD Amaranth. That single was released in Finland on August 22 inclded a bonus track entitled While your lips are Still Red which was written as the theme for the upcoming Finnish film Lieksla. It is not technichaly a Nightwish song as it only features Marco on vocals and acoustic bass, Tuomas on keys and Jukka on drums. The songs video was officially released on the 15 of June. Amaranth achieved gold after less than two days of being released.

Dark Passsion Play was released in the last week of September 2007 in Europe, October 1 in UK and October 2 in the US. There was to be three seperate releases 1) a single CD, 2) a 2-CD special edition which has one bonus track on the first CD and a second CD which is ochestral versions of every song on the album and 3) a limited edition 3 CD version with the two CD's from vcersion 2 and an extra CD with some demo versions e.g. Poet and the Penduklum, also some bonus tracks e.g. The Escapist and Ermaan Viimeinen and a vocal version of Last of the Wilds. Hietala gets a lot more freedom in vocals for this song singing at least back up in almost every song (exceptions are Amaranth, Eva) he also sings lead vocals in a few songs e.g. The Islander, Master Passion Greed.

Quit a few magazines including Kerrang! have said that the departure of Tarja hyas released the band from their shell and that they have no restraint. They used some 175 additional musicians for the ochestral and solo parts has resulted in the band being described as an epic metal especially the 14 minute opener The Poet and the Pendulum. The album has been awarded 5/5 (classic) by Kerrang magazine.

Tel Aviv Israel on October 6, 2007 was their first official concert with the new singer. The Dark Passion Play tour has now visited the US, Canada and almost all of Europe and have also planned tours in parts of Asia, Australia, another tour in North America, Europe and much more. According to Holopainen this will be the longest tour Nightwish has ever had lasting about 2 and a half years.

On March 3, 2008 Nightwish lost to the American power metal band Kamelot, by one single vote in the Metal Storm Awards 2007. Both bands were nominees for the Best Power Metal Album of 2007 (Dark Passion Play and Ghost Opera). Nightwish also lost to Kamelot in the category of Best Music Video, their song being Amaranth. However they did win Biggest Suprise of 2007. In August they announced that their CD was to be followed by a photobook called Dark Passion Gallery with the photos by Finnish photographer Ville Akseli Juurikkala with captions by the band members and a foreword by Holopainen. This was released on October 22.
